The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) Wednesday this week paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) at its National Secretariat in Osho Drive, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos.

The AMJON delegation comprises of Vera Osokpor, Vice President; Segun Oladipupo, Secretary; Ugochukwu Ezurike, Asst. Secretary; Barnabas Esiet, Treasurer; others are, Tedunjaye Raymond, Financial Secretary; Uzor Odigbo, PRO; and Rhoda Ogunseye, Welfare Officer, who visited the Union to congratulate the new leadership of the Union under Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, the newly elected President-General of the Union alongside his hardworking executives.

The executives of AMJON were at the Secretariat to felicitate with the new PG over his landslide victory during the polls and to show solidarity towards his dynamic leadership since assuming of office.

The leadership of AMJON also strongly pledged to work with the pragmatic labour leader of the Maritime Workers Union, saying that it would give the PG all supports in the Maritime sector, describing him as one labour leader who does not speak with both sides of his mouth, stressing that Comrade Bunu is a Press friendly labour leader and would always accord him that significant gesture at all times in the industry.

AMJON also wished him well in his onerous journey towards piloting the affairs of such a big Union as the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, which immense contributions toward the growth of Nigeria’s economy cannot be overemphasized.

In response, the Astute administrator, Maritime Expert and Veteran Sailor, Comrade Bunu, thanked the Journalists for their August visit to the Union. He promised his continued support for AMJON; saying that the Union cannot operate in isolation within the sector without the reportage of Journalists, who are the “watch dog” of the industry: hence, his avowed synergy between the Union and the Press always.

The Delta State born labour leader did not mince words when he said that journalism should be practiced with fairness and justice in any given society; as the society looks up to them as true custodians of the realm of the Fourth Estate, in view of this, Comrade Bunu urged the Journalists to always balance their reportage and not always given in to unnecessary sensationalism.

He thanked AMJON warmly for the visit and promised them that the Union’s door is always open at any time towards making sure that this synergy will continue to wax stronger.

Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media, MWUN
